Senate Republicans elect Nesbitt as Republican Leader, caucus leadership team

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Senate Republicans held caucus leadership elections today for the 2023-2026 term, electing Sen. Aric Nesbitt, R-Lawton, as Senate Republican Leader.

Nesbitt was elected this week to a second term in the Senate, representing the new 20th District.

“While the results of this week’s election were not what we hoped, I am honored to be chosen by my peers to lead the Republican caucus,” said Nesbitt. “The 18 members of this team bring a diverse array of talents and expertise to the Senate and are eager to get to work for the people of our state.”

Republican Leader-elect Nesbitt grew up on a six-generation family farm in West Michigan. He earned an economics degree from Hillsdale College, later earning a master’s in international business.

Nesbitt was elected to the first of three terms in the House of Representatives in 2010 before being elected to the Senate in 2018. He has been at the forefront of many major legislative efforts, including sponsoring Senate Bill 1 in 2019, which finally reformed Michigan’s broken car insurance system.

Nesbitt, his wife Trisha, daughter Catherine, and son William live in Lawton near his family farm.

“I have enjoyed positive working relationships across the aisle during my time in Lansing and I fully expect that to continue in my new role,” Nesbitt said. “I offer my congratulations to Majority Leader-elect Brinks and her leadership team, and I look forward to continuing the tradition of majority and minority leaders in the Senate finding common ground where possible. But Republicans also take seriously our obligation to stand firm against any proposal from the majority that runs afoul of the will of the people we serve.”
