LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Legislature on Thursday gave final approval to legislation sponsored by Sen. Roger Victory honoring a fallen police officer from Grand Haven.
Senate Bill 527 would name a portion of highway U.S. 31 in Ottawa County after Public Safety Officer Scott Flahive of Grand Haven. Flahive was killed in 1994 while attempting to apprehend an escaped inmate of the Ottawa County Jail.
Dec. 13 marked the 25th anniversary of Officer Flahive’s death.
“We must never forget our heroes, and Officer Scott Flahive was certainly a hero to his family, friends and fellow police officers before his life was tragically cut short while serving,” said Victory, R-Hudsonville. “I was happy to introduce a measure to name a portion of U.S. 31 after Officer Flahive to help honor his memory. This will help keep that memory alive.”
Under the bill, the portion of U.S. 31 known as Beacon Boulevard — beginning at the intersection with Robbins Road in the city of Grand Haven and continuing north to the Jackson Street intersection — would be known as the “Officer Scott Flahive Memorial Highway.”
The sign marking the highway will be fully funded by private donations.
SB 527 now heads to the governor to be signed into law.
