Victory urges free and fair trade with Canada and Mexico

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Roger Victory sent a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in the wake of the United States’ decision not to renew the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

“The USMCA was a landmark trade deal that secured a critical win for Michigan families and workers during the first Trump administration,” said Victory, R-Hudsonville. “The agreement built a strong foundation for trade between the United States, Canada and Mexico — ensuring critical market access for Michigan industries.”

In the letter, Victory wrote, “Michigan’s industrial and agricultural economies are reliant on trade with Canada, and the mutually beneficial relationship has been foundational for the economic vitality of our workforce… it is critical that the United States secures a deal that is a win for Michiganders and the American people.”

Following the United States’ decision not to renew, the agreement will remain in place while negotiations continue. An annual joint review of the USMCA will now be required until a new agreement is struck or the current agreement is terminated.
