LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Lana Theis on Wednesday called on the Legislature to approve funding to provide victims of an Unemployment Insurance Agency data leak with at least one year of identity theft protection.
“It has gone from bad to worse at the UIA,” said Theis, R-Brighton. “At a time when the agency erroneously gave away billions of taxpayer dollars to fraudsters, we now learn that the Whitmer Administration also failed to secure people’s sensitive information, a breach of trust and security that subjected unsuspecting residents in need of help to further financial harm. The least the state can do is provide these affected individuals with identity theft protection, as we work to overhaul this terribly mismanaged agency.”
The Office of the Auditor General recently revealed in a report that the UIA failed to limit access to sensitive information the agency used to collect, pay and receive unemployment payments.
