LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt and Senate Appropriations Minority Vice Chair Jon Bumstead on Monday announced that Senate Republicans will publicly disclose their legislatively directed spending requests in an effort to increase transparency in the state budget process and match new rules adopted by the Michigan House.
“Michigan families deserve a better budget process that is transparent, accountable and reflects the true needs of taxpayers,” said Nesbitt, R-Porter Township. “While Democrats in control of the Senate have chosen to move forward in the dark, Senate Republicans are taking action to restore public trust and ensure that every request brings real value to improving our state.”
Senate Republicans have launched a website to track legislatively directed spending item requests, including information about proposed funding recipients and how these projects benefit Michigan residents.
“Increasing transparency into the budget process helps us to create a more responsible spending plan because it allows for a more open conversation and fully measures these items against our common goals and shared priorities,” said Bumstead, R-North Muskegon. “By opening up this process, we are making sure that each request is evaluated on merit and serves a clear purpose for all Michigan residents.”
