LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Ruth Johnson is reminding area community groups that July 1 is the application deadline for a new grant program to aid in the control or eradication of aquatic invasive plants in Michigan’s inland lakes.
“Aquatic invasive plants can displace native species, disrupt habitats for fish and threaten the health of our lakes and the livelihoods of thousands of Michigan families,” said Johnson, R-Holly. “I encourage all eligible lake and homeowner associations to apply for one of these grants to help protect our waters and economy from invasive plants.”
The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) in 2019 will provide approximately $100,000 in grants through the Aquatic Invasive Plant (AIP) Control Grant Program for the control or eradication of aquatic invasive plant species in inland lakes using physical, biological or chemical control activities.
Eligible applicants must:
• Be a legally constituted lake association or nonprofit, property owners association, homeowners association, lake board or special assessment district; and
• Have demonstrated that a permit from EGLE is in effect to conduct the control or eradication activities included in the eligible project.
