LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Mark Huizenga, R-Walker, issued the following statement after voting for legislation to amend the reporting and registering requirements of the state’s Sex Offenders Registration Act in response to recent court actions:
“Keeping our communities safe, especially our kids and our most vulnerable, must always be a top priority. I supported this measure because families deserve access to information that helps them protect themselves and their loved ones.
“This important change would ensure that victims of these horrific crimes are not further traumatized by a system that lets offenders disappear from accountability. It is a step toward helping survivors heal and live their lives once again.
“Recent court decisions made parts of the existing law unenforceable. Without the changes, more than 30,000 individuals would be removed from the registry and not be required to register ever again.”
