Sen. Hoitenga introduces legislation to save Michiganders $380M, repeal state tax on residential energy usage

LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Michele Hoitenga on Wednesday introduced legislation that would save Michiganders an estimated $380 million a year by canceling the state tax charged on residential energy usage.

“We as legislators have a responsibility to ensure government isn’t making it more difficult for Michiganders to meet the basic needs of heating their homes and keeping their lights on,” said Hoitenga, R-Manton. “The state has billions of dollars in surplus at a time when historic inflation has its residents paying higher energy, food, and housing costs. We should help to make energy more affordable.”

Hoitenga’s Senate Bill 61 and SB 60, sponsored by Sen. Roger Hauck, R-Mt. Pleasant, would work together to exempt the residential use of electricity, natural or artificial gas, or home heating fuels from the state’s sales and use tax.

The bills have been sent to the Senate Committee on Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection for consideration.
