Runestad to host press conference demanding answers and transparency from MSP on a 2020 case against detective accused of sending nude photos

LANSING, Mich. — Senate Civil Rights, Judiciary and Public Safety Committee Minority Vice Chait Jim Runestad will host a press conference at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 15, to discuss a civil lawsuit that has been filed against a Michigan State Police detective accused of sending unsolicited nude photos to a widow he first interviewed.

Who: Sen. Jim Runestad, R-White Lake, and Bill Colovos, attorney for the plaintiff.

What: Runestad will outline legislation he will introduce to penalize a person who sends either a sexually explicit video or photo by text or electronic message without the other party’s consent and to demand answers and transparency from Michigan State Police.

When:  Friday, March 15 at 1:30 p.m.

Where: Michigan State Police Brighton Post, 4337 Buno Road in Brighton.

Brief:  A Southeast Michigan woman has filed a lawsuit against a Michigan State Police detective she says sent her unsolicited nude photos and videos after he was assigned to interview her following her husband’s suicide in 2020. The woman says she was too afraid to speak out about the severely inappropriate behavior for years in fear that the detective may somehow retaliate.

The detective remains on duty. MSP First District Headquarters Public Information Officer Lt. Rene Gonzalez has told media, “We will not comment on pending litigation. We can confirm that this matter was fully investigated when it was initially brought to our attention and the employee was disciplined.”
