Runestad requests Gov. Whitmer raise flags to full-staff on Inauguration Day

LANSING, Mich.Sen. Jim Runestad on Tuesday requested Gov. Gretchen Whitmer order flags to be raised to full-staff at the Michigan Capitol and all state buildings on Inauguration Day in honor of the inauguration of Donald J. Trump as the 47th president of the United States.

“Inauguration Day should be a day of hope for our state and nation as President Trump resumes his duties in the White House,” said Runestad, R-White Lake. “While the nation mourns the passing of former President Carter, we should be using this day to proudly stand with the new administration, which includes raising all flags to full-staff.”

Runestad’s request follows a similar order given by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who announced Monday that all flags in Texas would be raised to full-staff for Inauguration Day. President Joe Biden had ordered all flags to be lowered to half-staff for 30 days following the death of former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100 — a timeline that coincides with Inauguration Day on Jan. 20.

“Keeping flags lowered on Inauguration Day demeans the significance of Trump’s inaugural ceremonies and disregards the weight that this day should hold for all Michiganders. I request that Gov. Whitmer order all flags to be raised in celebration of our nation’s great traditions and in respect of the incoming 47th president of the United States,” Runestad said.
