LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Jim Runestad reminded residents on Friday that the Huron-Clinton Metroparks will be open for the Memorial Day weekend.
“It has been a difficult several weeks for all of us as we have confronted this pandemic, sheltered in place and stayed mostly inside,” said Runestad, R-White Lake. “Now, with the unofficial start of summer upon us, I hope we all take some time to get outside and safely enjoy a Pure Michigan Memorial Day with our loved ones.”
Runestad said beaches and golf courses will be open, and the parks’ restrooms are in the process of reopening.
Huron-Clinton Metroparks’ management is stressing that residents should focus on their health and safety and that of others when coming to the parks.
“To protect those who are visiting, as well as Metroparks staff, visitors are required to follow established COVID-19 safety guidelines, including giving others six feet of safe space,” Runestad said. “Whether the parks will remain open depends on everyone practicing social distancing.”
Runestad said visitors will be able to do the following this weekend at the 13 Metroparks:
• Play a round of disc golf.
• Hit the greens and fairways of your favorite Metroparks golf course.
• Walk, hike, bike or run the trails.
• Paddle the lakes and rivers.
• Drop a line and catch some fish.
• Swim at one of the parks’ beaches. Beaches at Kensington, Lake St. Clair and Stony Creek Metroparks will be open (pending water quality tests).
• Picnic with your family. Be sure to practice social distancing; grills and picnic shelters are available for use, but 50% of picnic tables beneath shelters have been removed to discourage large groups from congregating.
