LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt on Thursday evening gathered a group of state lawmakers and education leaders to discuss solutions for Michigan’s broken school system during a standing-room-only Save MI Schools Town Hall in Oakland County.
“Michigan schools are failing under the control of the Whitmer administration and far-left Lansing Democrats,” said Nesbitt, R-Porter Township. “A vast majority of students cannot read at grade level, and our schools rank in the bottom 10 nationally. It’s time to get the woke nonsense out of our schools and return our focus to the basics of reading, writing, science and math. The government does not exist to be a co-parent. It’s time to empower parents once again and give them and their students more choices and opportunities to succeed. We must save our schools so our kids can make it in Michigan.”
Nesbitt has also voiced his support for enrolling Michigan in President Donald Trump’s new Federal Tax Credit Scholarship Program for K-12 education.
“We are blessed to have a partner in President Trump fighting for our kids,” Nesbitt said. “Gov. Whitmer could help families and students with the stroke of a pen, and it would cost Michigan nothing. But she hasn’t, and she continues to look the other way and align herself with a far-left base that seeks to stifle choices, eliminate accountability and dismantle standards. Our kids deserve better.”
Along with Nesbitt, the Save MI Schools Town Hall panel included state Sen. Lana Theis, R-Brighton; state Rep. Jamie Thompson, R-Brownstown Township; State Board of Education member Nikki Snyder, R-Goodrich; Americans for Prosperity’s Lindsey Sanders; and Katherine Bussard, executive director at Salt & Light Global.
The event was livestreamed and is available in its entirety on Nesbitt’s X account and Facebook page.
