Nesbitt to Dems: Hands off the state’s rainy day fund

LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, on Friday issued the following statement after state fiscal and economic leaders discussed Michigan’s annual budget forecast during the May Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference:

“Michigan doesn’t have a revenue problem; it has a spending problem because Gov. Whitmer and Lansing Democrats are addicted to spending your money. They have burned through a historic $9 billion surplus, raided the teacher retirement fund and raised taxes and fees to feed their habit. Now, they want to dig their greedy hands into the state’s rainy day fund. Absolutely not — out-of-control spending is a politician-created emergency.”

“The state’s budget has grown nearly 50% since Whitmer took office. Michigan’s seniors and hardworking families haven’t seen that kind of boost in their wallets. It’s time to shake up the status quo in Lansing, rein in big government spending once and for all, and put a stop to the waste, fraud and abuse of tax dollars led by Democrats.

“Our next state budget must focus on helping our students succeed, keeping our communities safe, making transformational investments in our infrastructure and paying down our debts. It’s time to lower taxes and put money back in your pocket so everyone has the chance to make it in Michigan.”
