LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt on Wednesday issued a strong condemnation of U.S. District Judge Judith Levy for her shocking remarks praising a Honduran illegal immigrant convicted of brutally sexually assaulting a disabled Michigan woman.
“This is an outrageous example of judicial malpractice,” said Nesbitt, R-Porter Township. “Judge Levy’s decision to praise a violent sex offender who preyed on one of our most vulnerable citizens shows she has no business sitting on the bench. It is clear she cares more about enabling violent repeat criminal illegals than justice for their victims and the safety of law-abiding Michiganders. Radical activist judges endanger our communities and undermine the rule of law.”
Edys Renan Membreno Diaz illegally reentered the United States seven times, according to court records, and pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman with cerebral palsy and cognitive delays in a horrific attack that caused severe physical injuries. During federal sentencing for unlawful reentry, Levy, an Obama appointee, is reported to have commended Diaz for “supporting your family” and working in “jobs that Americans apparently do not want,” and even suggested he could serve as an “ambassador” for U.S. immigration laws. She sentenced him to time served, rejecting prosecutors’ call for additional prison time.
Nesbitt emphasized the urgent need for stronger judicial oversight mechanisms to hold rogue judges accountable and remove those who demonstrate such blatant bias and disregard for public safety.
“Senate Republicans understand the importance of backing the blue to keep our communities safe. We stand with ICE and our brave law enforcement officers working to secure our borders and protect American citizens. Every last violent criminal illegal immigrant must be deported without exception,” Nesbitt said. “We will continue fighting for secure borders, supporting our law enforcement officers, and demanding judicial accountability to ensure Michigan families are protected.”
