LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, issued the following statement after state fiscal and economic leaders predicted lower state revenues, growing unemployment and consumer uncertainty during Friday’s annual May Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference:
“We’re seeing the impact of ‘Bidenomics’ and ‘Whitmeromics’ on Michigan’s economy. At a time when Michiganders are facing higher unemployment and economic uncertainty than most states, Lansing Democrats seem to think now is a good time to raise taxes and fees.
“This week, Senate Democrats forced through their version of a state budget that was even larger than their governor’s proposal earlier this year. Hardworking taxpayers cannot afford a state government that continues to grow without bounds. The Democrats’ plan to keep overspending and raising taxes could not be more wrong for Michigan.
“As the Legislature works to finalize the state budget, we must rein in wasteful spending and provide real tax relief. There is plenty of room — in a budget that has grown more than 40% since Gov. Whitmer came into office — to fix our crumbling roads and bridges, as well as make meaningful investments in education and public safety without raising taxes. If Michigan families have to tighten their household budgets, the Legislature has a duty to make the necessary cuts in our state budget and put money back in the pockets of those who need it most.
“Democrats have used the state budget to put bloated government first. It’s time to change direction and actually put the people of Michigan first.”
