McBroom: Senate votes to restore budget funding

LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Ed McBroom, R-Vulcan, released the following statement on Wednesday, after the Senate approved supplemental appropriations legislation aimed at restoring funds in the fiscal year 2020 budget that were previously cut by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer:

“I was pleased to join my colleagues today in voting to restore critical funding in the state budget that was cut by the governor.

“From reductions in vital payments in lieu of taxes (PILT) funding, to the elimination of state financial support for rural isolated Upper Peninsula school districts, cuts to rural health care services, and many more programs and services, Upper Peninsula residents have suffered from the cuts while they await resolution. Without funding restoration, rural schools and hospitals have been facing possible closure and counties have been facing layoffs.

“While still needing approval in the House, I am hopeful today’s action will break the dam to help reverse the governor’s vetoes and administrative transfers so residents get the funding they have been promised and expecting.”
