LANSING, Mich. — Senate Majority Floor Leader Dan Lauwers on Tuesday applauded a Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) announcement approving a $1.5 million Michigan Business Development Program grant for a global automotive supplier in the city of St. Clair.
Magna Electric Vehicle Structures-Michigan, Inc. was awarded the grant for a project that will generate a total private investment of $70.1 million and create more than 300 jobs over the next five years.
“This is great news for Magna Electric, the city of St. Clair and the region,” said Lauwers, R-Brockway Township. “This will only strengthen Michigan’s leadership in advanced manufacturing and the goal of our state becoming the epicenter of autonomous and electric vehicle manufacturing in the U.S.”
Magna Electric Vehicle Structures-Michigan, Inc. is a newly created entity of Magna International, Inc., a global automotive supplier whose roots in the auto industry go back to 1957.
The company plans to construct a 345,000-square-foot facility with the ability to support an expansion of up to 1 million square feet. It has been awarded a new program for the all-new 2022 GMC Hummer EV, set to begin initial production at GM’s Factory Zero facility in Detroit-Hamtramck this fall.
The city of St. Clair anticipates approval of a real property tax abatement in support of the project. The company also received approval of a State Education Tax abatement to be used along with the locally approved abatement.
