Hoitenga calls on Michigan lawmakers to follow Trump’s lead, eliminate taxes on overtime earnings

LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Michele Hoitenga this week urged her fellow lawmakers to follow the lead of President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” and pass her legislation to eliminate state income tax on overtime earnings and bring much-needed tax relief to hardworking families across Michigan.

“President Trump is leading the way to bring America into an economic golden age with his ‘big, beautiful bill’ that would, among other important provisions, end taxes on overtime,” said Hoitenga, R-Manton. “Now is the time for Michigan lawmakers to follow the example of his economic agenda and bring an end to taxes on overtime in our state once and for all.”

Trump’s bill, which passed in the House last week with a provision to eliminate taxes on overtime earnings, is now making its way through the Senate in its journey from Capitol Hill to the president’s desk.

“My bill to end state income tax on overtime earnings would bring much-needed relief to the forgotten middle-class families of Northern Michigan who struggle to make ends meet and are overtaxed because of Lansing Democrats,” Hoitenga said.

In March, Hoitenga introduced Senate Bill 125 to eliminate state income tax on overtime earnings. That legislation, along with her SB 292 to end property taxes for anyone over the age of 70, has been referred to the Senate Committee on Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection for further consideration.
