Damoose supports commonsense consumer protection reforms

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. John Damoose on Thursday joined his Senate colleagues in unanimously approving bipartisan legislation aimed at better protecting Michigan consumers.

Senate Bills 535 and 536 would require companies offering subscription services to notify customers ahead of time that subscription renewal is automatic and notify subscribers prior to an automatic renewal taking place.

The bills would also require such services to include a clear, easy-to-use unsubscribe feature and prohibit penalization if a consumer chooses to unsubscribe.

“Life happens. People have families, jobs, obligations, and sometimes the less important things, like canceling a subscription or free trial, fall by the wayside,” said Damoose, R-Harbor Springs. “We all get annoyed when we realize a subscription has renewed before we canceled it, and I would argue that many companies are relying on that misstep. These bills provide mechanisms to protect consumers and clearly outline the guidelines companies that offer these kinds of services must follow.

“Simply put: this will save people money.”

The bill will now go to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
