Damoose secures $200 million investment in Escanaba

LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. John Damoose helped secure funding to modernize the paper mill in Escanaba and secure over 1,000 jobs through legislation that was recently signed into law.

“This is a major investment that will strengthen the local economy and keep the mill operational for generations to come,” said Damoose, R-Harbor Springs. “I am proud to stand up for Upper Peninsula families and help secure funding to keep these jobs long into the future.”

The legislation includes, among other critical state projects, a $200 million investment to make upgrades to the paper mill in Escanaba — a move that is expected to boost economic activity in the area and save over 1,000 jobs.

The project will be met with a more than $1 billion private investment as well.

“I will continue to support strategic investments and policies that foster growth and secure the economy of the entire Upper Peninsula,” Damoose said. “This was a great bipartisan effort that invests in the state’s future and a real win not only for the Upper Peninsula, but for all of Michigan.”

SB 7 was signed into law and is now Public Act 1 of 2023.
