LANSING—Sen. Jim Stamas and Rep. Peter Pettalia attended the Michigan Press Association (MPA) Governor’s Luncheon with Alpena News editor and publisher Bill Speer on Friday at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids during the organization’s annual convention.
Speer will be taking over as the MPA’s new president this year after serving as an MPA executive board member for six years.
“Bill Speer is an award-winning news writer and editor and an esteemed member of the Alpena community,” said Stamas, R-Midland. “People might not know that, in addition to his press responsibilities, Bill has been active in numerous community service organizations and coached youth sports.
“Congratulations to Bill for being named the 2015 president of the Michigan Press Association. It is a great honor, and he will do a fantastic job leading this organization.”
Speer has served as editor of the Alpena News since 1988 and added the role of publisher three years later.
