LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Ken Horn, R-Frankenmuth, issued the following statement on Tuesday, in response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s 2019 State of the State address:

“The first thing I would like to acknowledge was the governor’s optimism about continuing Michigan’s momentum going forward. We have made great strides in recent years and I hope we can work together to continue making Michigan better for future generations.

“In my role chairing the Economic and Small Business Development Committee, I’ve discovered that the greatest challenge facing Michigan is a shortage of talented people. In addition to training Michiganders for great jobs, we need to encourage people from around the country and the rest of the world to move to Michigan and bring their skills and talents with them.

“Michigan’s bright future begins with a solid career path for our students. We must also make it easier for teachers to teach. As Governor Whitmer mentioned, teaching is more than a career, it’s a calling. Parents, teachers and counselors have a terrific opportunity to talk to our young students about everything Michigan has to offer. Let’s make education and career readiness Michigan’s top priority.

“The committees I’m chairing and serving on — Economic Development, Education, Universities and Community Colleges — represent areas Governor Whitmer and I can work very well together on. I’m looking forward to inviting the governor up to see the good things that are already happening in our region and partnering with her to continue Michigan’s growth.
