LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Thomas Albert was elected by his colleagues to serve as Republican floor leader for the legislative session beginning in 2027.
Albert, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, will serve as the floor general for Senate Republicans in the next legislative term. As the second-ranking member of the caucus, he will lead Republican floor strategy as legislation moves through the Senate, which will have a Democratic majority.
“I accept the challenge of continuing to fight for what’s needed to get Michigan back on track,” said Albert, R-Lowell. “Senate Republicans will continue to fight to make life more affordable and create economic opportunities for Michiganders, while holding state government accountable.”
Albert joins a Republican Senate leadership team for next session led by Sen. Roger Hauck, R-Mount Pleasant, as Republican leader and includes Sen.-elect John Wetzel, R-Grand Haven, as Republican whip; Sen.-elect Gina Johnsen, R-Portland, as Republican caucus chair; Sen. Michele Hoitenga, R-Manton, as assistant Republican leader; Sen.-elect Mike Murphy, R-Howell, as assistant Republican floor leader; Sen.-elect Donni Steele, R-Orion Township, as assistant Republican whip; and Sen. Jonathan Lindsey, R-Coldwater, as assistant Republican caucus chair.
“It’s clear people are frustrated with the direction of our nation and our state,” Albert said. “It is our responsibility to advocate fiercely at the state level for policies that will put Michigan on the right path moving forward — one that will allow our families and communities to thrive. Centralized planning and bigger government are not the answer. We should instead strive for limited government, free enterprise and strong schools to help every Michigan resident reach their full potential.”
Voters in Michigan’s 18th Senate District this week reelected Albert for a second term.
