LANSING—Free summer weekend! Sen. John Proos is reminding residents that the state’s annual Summer Free Fishing Weekend is this Saturday and Sunday, June 7-8, as part of Michigan’s 2014 Summer Kickoff.
“Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend provides a great opportunity for families to introduce the joy of fishing to children or for anglers to get away from the stress of life and relax in the Michigan outdoors,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “I encourage Southwest Michigan anglers — and those who have never gone fishing — to take advantage of this annual celebration of one of Michigan’s premier outdoor activities this weekend.”
During the weekend, all fishing license fees will be waived, but all fishing regulations still apply.
“This tradition is an excellent time for Michigan families and out-of-state visitors to enjoy some of the world’s best fishing on both inland and Great Lakes waters,” Proos said. “This year, the free fishing weekend is part of a variety of free activities available.
“During Michigan’s 2014 Summer Kickoff this weekend, families can pass down the love of fishing to the next generation, take a ride on an ORV or spend time in the outdoors at one of 102 state parks – free of charge.”
On June 8, visitors can enter any of Michigan’s 102 state parks at no charge. This is the only day of the year when no vehicle entry fee is required. Find a park at www.michigan.gov/stateparks. June 7-8 is also Free ORV Weekend, when ORV license and permit fees are waived for off-road vehicles. Anyone may ride an ORV for free, but all ORV laws still apply.
“Southwest Michigan is home to several state parks for families to enjoy,” Proos said. “These parks feature magnificent beaches and sand dunes, miles of hiking and biking trails and thousands of acres of undeveloped natural areas.”
Proos also noted that the state has more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, 36,000 miles of rivers and 11,000 inland lakes for fishing and outdoor enthusiasts to visit this weekend.
