LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, on Monday issued the following statement as he joined with mourners during a rally on the Michigan Capitol lawn honoring the life and legacy of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk:

“Charlie was a good man who treasured his God, his family and his country. He boldly shared his message with others, even those who disagreed with him, and it cost him his life. He was murdered in broad daylight, leaving his wife, children, friends and a nation in sorrow.

“While there are some who celebrate his loss and want the Turning Point movement to be silenced, Charlie’s voice has only been amplified. Although we grieve, we will not be disheartened in our mission to preserve and defend our freedom and our great nation.

“We will continue proclaiming the values of faith, family and patriotism that America so desperately needs — not through violence, riots and destruction, but through words, love and engaging with others in the marketplace of ideas.”
