Lindsey: Parents are teachers, and homeschool parents are educators
October 13, 2026

LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Jonathan Lindsey’s resolution recognizing Oct. 13, 2026, as Michigan Homeschool Day was adopted by the Michigan Senate earlier this month.

“Parents are already teachers. They lead by example, teach honesty and kindness, and instill the values of hard work and determination,” said Lindsey, R-Coldwater. “Parents are teachers, and their children’s education is best suited when they are directly involved in their schooling.

“Michigan law recognizes ‘the natural, fundamental right of parents and legal guardians to determine and direct the care, teaching, and education of their children’ in Section 10 of the Revised School Code. This year, as we celebrate 250 years of American freedom, it is especially fitting that we honor the principles of liberty and self-determination as they apply to homeschooling, where parents decide what is best for their children with minimal government involvement.

“I’m grateful to my Senate colleagues for supporting this resolution and honoring the homeschool families who serve Michigan as dedicated educators, community leaders and tireless advocates.”
