LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Mark Huizenga on Monday joined community partners, local officials and West Michigan Sports Commission representatives at a ribbon-cutting ceremony commemorating the official opening of the $13.5 million expansion of the Meijer Sports Complex in Plainfield Township.

“This is a tremendous resource for athletes of all levels and families throughout West Michigan,” said Huizenga, R-Walker. “Not only will this serve advanced athletics and tournaments, it will provide an avenue for young athletes to compete and achieve long-term success by teaching them critical life lessons learned in sports like discipline and the value of hard work.”

Huizenga also pointed to the economic benefits this expansion will bring to the region.

“This expansion will be a strong economic driver for West Michigan,” Huizenga said. “Since opening more than a decade ago, the West Michigan Sports Commission has supported businesses in the area, and this development will allow the complex to host more athletes and further increase economic activity and support for local businesses.”

The project came to fruition through both public and private funding. During last year’s budget discussions, Huizenga secured $3 million in state funding for the project, calling it an invaluable asset for all of West Michigan.

During the ceremony, Huizenga presented the West Michigan Sports Commission with an official state of Michigan tribute acknowledging the milestone the expansion represents.
