Emmons: New property tax credit to help all veterans 100%-disabled due to service

LANSING—Under legislation signed into law last month, disabled veterans and their families can apply for a full property tax credit on their homestead, said Sen. Judy Emmons.

“Our veterans have made tremendous sacrifices in service to America and many came home disabled or unable to work,” said Emmons, R-Sheridan. “There are more than 80,000 disabled veterans living in Michigan, and this broader and clearer credit it about recognizing the significant challenges they face in owning a home.”

Public Act 161 of 2013 replaces the old exemption for “specially adapted housing” with a more general property tax credit available to honorably discharged veterans who are 100 percent disabled as a result of their military service or have been rated individually unemployable by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

“This credit applies to all property taxes on a veteran’s home and removes the requirement that the home be specially adapted for accessibility,” Emmons said. “Simply put, if you or your spouse is a 100 percent disabled veteran, a Michigan resident and a homeowner, you are eligible for this new and improved credit.”

Under PA 161, taxpayers are required to file annual affidavits between tax day and the adjournment of the local December Board of Review.

“Since most boards of review begin on Tuesday and will adjourn this week, I encourage all mid-Michigan disabled veterans and their spouses to act quickly,” Emmons said. “An affidavit for the credit does not need to be on an official form, so requesting the credit is easy.

“I also urge any disabled veteran who is unable to apply this week for the 2013 credit to make sure to claim the exemption in March for the 2014 tax year.”

The exemption is available to Michigan residents who are disabled veterans and also to their unremarried surviving spouses who own and use the home as their homestead.
