Bumstead opposes budget that ‘pulls from savings’ to increase spending
April 30, 2026

LANSING, Mich. — Senate Appropriations Minority Vice Chair Jon Bumstead, R-Norton Shores, issued the following statement Thursday after the Michigan Senate approved a fiscal year 2027 budget plan along with a supplemental budget for the current fiscal year:

“We need a budget that focuses on the real-life challenges many families and small businesses are facing, but this budget misses the mark.

“We already have the resources to deliver meaningful relief, improve essential services and set our kids up for success — yet this budget instead pulls from our state’s savings and increases spending to levels that are not sustainable.

“This is the same kind of short-term budgeting that created challenges for Michigan in the past, and we’ve seen what happens when government lives beyond its means. We should not be asking hardworking families to shoulder that burden, and we can’t raid the budget stabilization fund meant to protect our state against future economic strife.

“When times were difficult, we made responsible choices and kept spending in check — and that discipline improved our state’s financial outlook.

“This is a first step, and I remain willing to work to enact a responsible spending plan that invests in our shared priorities and makes a positive impact in the lives of Michigan families — not one that returns our state to the same challenges we worked hard to overcome.”
