LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joseph Bellino on Friday voted for legislation to honor Monroe County Sheriff Deputy Darrian Young, who died in the line of duty in 2020 at age 24.
“Animal Control Officer Darrian Young was an enthusiastic public servant and animal lover who died far too soon,” said Bellino, R-Monroe. “It’s tragic when someone so full of life dies so early and unexpectedly. Six years after the loss of Deputy Young, we are finally sending the governor legislation to help our community honor her service to the people of Monroe County and remember her sacrifice.”
House Bill 4100 would designate a portion of Highway M-50 in Monroe County from South Raisinville Road to Herr Road as the “Animal Control Officer Darrian Young Memorial Highway.”
It is identical to Senate Bill 978 that was sponsored by Bellino in 2024 and passed by the Senate.
Young died June 6, 2020, from injuries sustained in the line of duty when her marked Animal Control Division vehicle was struck by a drunken driver.
If HB 4100 is signed into law, it will have no fiscal impact on state or local government. State law requires sufficient private contributions to completely cover the cost of erecting and maintaining markers indicating the name of a memorial highway.
