By Sen. Joe Hune
22nd Senate District
Recently, I had the honor of being named a “Conservative All-Star of the Michigan Legislature” in the “Defenders of Liberty Category” by the American Conservative Union (ACU).
The ACU is America’s oldest and largest grassroots conservative organization. Founded in 1964, ACU represents the views of Americans who are concerned with economic growth through lower taxes and reduced government spending and the issues of liberty, personal responsibility, traditional values and national security.
I am proud that my firm conservative principles and voting record are appreciated by a highly respected organization like the American Conservative Union.
Since I began serving you in the Michigan Senate in 2011, my Republican colleagues and I have proven that difficult choices must be made to get our state back on track and secure Michigan’s future.
The ACU 2012 State Legislative Ratings Guide grades state legislators on their votes on key conservative issues. This is the second year in a row the ACU has taken their highly touted congressional ratings program to rank state legislatures.
According to the publication, “ACU Defenders of Liberty are those members of the Michigan Legislature who were present and cast a vote for each adjudicated roll call and scored 100 percent on the ACU 2012 State Legislative Ratings.”
As a lawmaker, it is important and necessary for me to be present for every vote so I can do the job that I was elected to do and am honored to have.
The ACU bases their ratings on critical pieces of legislation that display conservative values ranging from abortion restrictions to unionization and labor agreements to tax cuts. Based on my voting record on these 18 measures, I received a 100 percent rank, making me one of only two lawmakers in the Michigan Legislature to earn such a score.
I have always voted fiscally conservative, and I have always promoted strong family values. You can count on me to continue to support and promote these conservative values.
