LANSING—As America prepares to celebrate its 238th birthday, Sen. John Proos is encouraging families to be respectful and proud when displaying the U.S. flag this Independence Day.
“The United States flag is a living symbol of American liberty and spirit,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “As Southwest Michigan families honor America by waving the flag, I urge everyone to remember everything that Old Glory represents – one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all. We owe it to our Founding Fathers who declared us free and everyone who protected that freedom that we treat the flag with respect.”
Proos encouraged residents to follow the U.S. Flag Code while displaying the flag. For information on the code and flag etiquette, residents can visit www.AmericanFlags.org.
“Please give homage to the flag while also properly caring for it, including retiring the flag with dignity if it is worn or tattered,” Proos said. “People with flags that are too worn to continue service can contact the Boy Scouts or their local Veterans of Foreign Wars or American Legion post. They often provide flag retirement services.
“For residents who want to buy a flag or need to replace a retired one, flags that have been flown over the Michigan Capitol are available through my office.”
Residents can order 3' x 5' U.S. or Michigan flags by calling Proos’ Senate office at 517-373-6960 or by emailing SenJProos@senate.michigan.gov.
“The Fourth of July is a joyous time to celebrate our freedoms, show our pride in our country and remember the declaration proclaimed more than two centuries ago that started it all,” Proos said. “I hope all Southwest Michigan families have a fun and safe Independence Day.”
