Sen. Jansen gives counties say in Renaissance Zone sunset extension

LANSING – A bill giving counties across the state a say in whether or not a geographic Renaissance Zone sunset is extended has been approved by both chambers of the Legislature, said Sen. Jansen, R-Gaines Township.

“Counties should have a say in a decision that will directly impact the amount of tax revenues they can collect,” Jansen said. “The language that I added to the bill puts county leaders at the table as we all work together toward successful economic growth. It is common sense that all parties affected should have their voices heard.”

Under current law, counties have no input on the establishment or extension of Renaissance Zones.

Jansen’s amendment will allow county governments to either approve or deny the extension of an existing Renaissance Zone.

“County governments across the state have been losing tax revenue without having any say in the matter,” Jansen said. “I look forward to seeing the bill signed into law.”

House Bill 5600 will now advance to the governor’s desk.
