Senator Colbeck Obtains Road Funding for Most Dangerous Road Stretch in State
LANSING, Mich. – Today State Senator Patrick Colbeck announced that Michigan's 7th Senate District will be the beneficiary of a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) project which is estimated to produce $5 million in roadway improvements. This project is the first step in fixing the most dangerous stretch of roadway in Michigan located near the Ford Rd./I-275 Interchange. The planned upgrades will allow Lotz Rd. to be used as a means of relieving some of the pressure on Ford Rd. and lays the groundwork for further upgrades to the interchange.
As vice chair of the Senate Appropriations Transportation Subcommittee, Colbeck worked with his fellow Senate leadership members and MDOT to put in place a new appropriations bill structure that makes the funding possible.
"These changes are necessary for public safety and economic growth," said Colbeck (R-Canton). "One of my biggest priorities was to secure funding to complete necessary upgrades to this road. This is a step in the right direction and a wonderful day for all of southeast Michigan."
Over the past 5 years, there have been over 95 accidents on the stretch of roadway surrounding the Ford Rd./I-275 Interchange. The project will widen Lotz Rd. in order to enhance traffic flow in the area. MDOT experts anticipate that this will be a step in the right direction to improve public safety.
Senator Colbeck noted that Canton Township Supervisor Phil LaJoy has been instrumental in bringing about the funding necessary for the improvements. "Supervisor LaJoy has been working for more than ten years to secure upgrades for the roads surrounding the Interchange and was instrumental in getting an agreement brokered in Lansing. This funding came about in large part because of his efforts."
"The stretch of road surrounding this Interchange is one of the most dangerous in the state," said LaJoy. "I have worked with our legislators, including Senator Colbeck and Majority Leader Randy Richardville to take the steps necessary to repair our roadways and ensure the safety of our residents. Improving Lotz Rd. is the first step in that process and I applaud their efforts to secure the funding necessary to do so."
Senator Colbeck also emphasized the vital impact this will have on improving commerce. "Ford Rd. has become one of the most sought after areas for commerce in the state. Improving traffic flow in this area will incentivize people to come to our community and will enable our community to continue to be one of the fastest growing areas in Michigan."
