LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Manufacturers Association (MMA) on Tuesday announced state Sen. Wayne Schmidt as its 2015 Legislator of the Year.
“It is a tremendous honor to be named Legislator of the Year by the Michigan Manufacturers Association,” said Schmidt, R-Traverse City, who chairs the Senate Commerce Committee. “Michigan has a storied manufacturing heritage, having helped develop and modernize the automotive industry, win world wars and, now, forging a new generation of high tech manufacturing for a new century. My sincere thanks to the MMA board, its members and the working women and men who are the backbone of our great state.”
The award is the association’s highest public policy honor, presented to a state policymaker who has provided essential leadership in regard to manufacturing issues over his or her career.
According to the MMA, Schmidt was honored for his proactive leadership on behalf of manufacturers and for his understanding that manufacturers must compete effectively in the global economy from their Michigan-based location.
“Senator Schmidt went to bat for manufacturers on essential environmental and regulatory issues — many of which could not have succeeded without his leadership,” said Chuck Hadden, MMA president and CEO. “His belief in the value and importance of Michigan manufacturing remained strong as he moved from the House to the Senate and continued his efforts to do what is right for the Great Lakes State.”
The MMA Legislator of the Year is recognized at the annual Legislative & Executive Reception held during Michigan Manufacturing Week in Lansing.
