LANSING, Mich. — After listening to Gov. Rick Snyder’s presentation of his proposed Fiscal Year 2017 state budget on Wednesday, Sen. Jim Stamas, R-Midland, issued the following statement:

“Governor Snyder detailed a blueprint that balances our state budget, builds on our economic recovery and meets our pressing challenges.

“I support the governor’s plan to enhance our investment in our education at all levels. We must continue to invest in our children to prepare them for academic and professional success.

“As our economy grows and creates jobs, the governor is calling for a greater focus on career training to help ensure students and workers have the opportunity to choose to live and work here in Michigan.

“We must find solutions that not only resolve the issues facing the people of Flint, but for all of Michigan. Ending the Flint water emergency is a top priority, and that is why the governor’s budget plan includes both immediate and long-term support for Flint and the residents impacted by the water crisis.

“During my public service, we’ve faced tough challenges and worked together to solve them. We balanced a $1.5 billion budget deficit, increased state spending on education to record levels, reduced our debt and energized our economy — which has created more than 420,000 private sector jobs. While it’s a positive record of results, we still have a lot of work to do.

“I look forward to reviewing this plan in more detail over the coming months and look forward to the input of the residents of the 36th District on their priorities in the budget.”
