State Reps. Kevin Daley, R-Lum; and
Ray Franz, R-Onekama.

What:
Press Conference

When:
Tuesday, June 5
9:15 a.m.

Where:
Michigan State Capitol, Room 405
Lansing

Brief:
Sen. Green will host a press conference to address legislation aimed at aiding Michigan’s fruit farmers who were devastated by this winter’s early thaw and subsequent frost damage.

Michigan’s estimated financial loss is around $223.5 million in farm gate value. Additional impact will be felt by the processing and agribusinesses up and down the value chain of the Michigan fruit and asparagus industries.

In 2002, the Michigan Legislature passed the Michigan Farm Disaster Relief Program. The purpose of the legislation was to provide assistance to Michigan farmers having financial hardship due to significant weather-related crops losses. The loans in 2002 were the assistance the farmers needed to get through a tough year and continue to push ahead to make Michigan a leader in agriculture.

The introduced legislation creates a similar program, aimed at providing relief to affected farmers in the form of low interest loans.
