LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Judy Emmons on Thursday congratulated the city of Clare for earning a state grant to enhance its downtown area.

The Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) has approved a $317,955 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for façade improvements needed for downtown Clare.

“Revitalizing our downtowns is about helping restore the core of our communities, and this grant will help Clare attract new jobs and new economic opportunities,” said Emmons, R-Sheridan. “This is outstanding news for the people of Clare, and I applaud the local leaders for working together with state officials to make this reconstruction and preservation project possible. Their efforts will bring a historic look and feel to the heart of downtown Clare, which will benefit area residents and the local economy.”

The project will include façade reconstruction, historic feature preservation, window and door replacement, masonry repair and lighting upgrades to seven buildings. It will generate private investment of $120,124 and create 20 jobs. Clare will contribute $10,000 toward the total façade improvement costs.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation, on behalf of the MSF, administers the CDBG program, which utilizes funds received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Each year, Michigan receives approximately $30 million in federal CDBG funds for various projects throughout the state.
