Repeat violent offender bill signed into law
LANSING— Legislation that will keep repeat violent offenders behind bars longer was recently signed into law said state Sen. Rick Jones.
Public Act 319 (Senate Bill 1109) requires a sentence of at least 25 years imprisonment if the offender had been convicted of three or more felonies and subsequently convicted of a serious crime such as murder, rape or kidnapping.
“If people have not learned their lesson after three felonies, then they need to be removed from society,” said Jones, R-Grand Ledge. “We have instances in Michigan where people with as many as 12 felonies were released from prison and allowed to commit crimes such as murder and rape. My legislation will keep these violent thugs behind bars.”
