LANSING—Sen. John Proos on Wednesday welcomed five young people to the Michigan Senate as part of a day at the Capitol. The group included three interns and two job shadowers.

“One of the best parts of my job is being able to meet and work with talented young people,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “Our interns, many of whom are from Southwest Michigan, bring a positive attitude to the office team while they learn valuable workplace skills that will help them advance their careers. They also provide great assistance to me and my staff. I want to express our sincere appreciation for their exceptional work on behalf of the people of Michigan.”

The group had a busy day with Proos. They attended Senate session, toured the Capitol, sat in on a Senate Finance Committee hearing and attended meetings with the senator. The group was treated to lunch with Proos’ staff, and those from Southwest Michigan ended the day by driving back with Proos.

“I had an amazing experience seeing the fast-paced life of a senator,” said intern Jacinta Reck, a St. Joseph native and junior at Grand Valley State University. “It was interesting to see how much goes on and all of the behind-the-scenes work that gets done in the day-to-day life.”

Daisy Priede, a Sawyer native and senior at Lake Michigan Catholic High School in St. Joseph, and Stephen Nickel, a Benton Harbor resident and sophomore at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana, spent the day job shadowing Proos.

“It was an honor and pleasure to have Daisy and Stephen job shadow me. They are outstanding young adults who both have bright futures ahead of them,” Proos said.

Joe Zilli, a senior at Michigan State University, and Nick Pillow, a Sawyer resident and junior at Eastern Michigan University, are regular interns in Proos’ Lansing office.
