LANSING, Mich. — After the Michigan Senate approved legislation to implement the recommendations of the governor’s bipartisan Responsible Retirement Reform for Local Government Task Force in an effort to help local governments address an $18.8 billion pension and retirement health care unfunded liability, Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, issued the following statement:
“The Senate has unanimously passed a package of bills that will better protect and preserve the retirement benefits of the men and women in law enforcement and firefighting services.
“Local governments have the responsibility to prioritize the funding of these promised benefits, which are currently almost $19 billion underfunded. I believe that with increased reporting and transparency regarding local funding of pensions and retiree health care, the promises made to those who run toward danger will be protected in retirement. They put their lives on the line for us, and they deserve the benefits they were promised. I thank every one of them for their helping keep Southwest Michigan safe.
“I also want to thank all those who took the time to contact me and share their thoughts. Hearing from residents is an important part of the legislative process.”
