LANSING — At halftime of the Marcellus Wildcats’ season-opening football game on Thursday, Sen. John Proos presented a trophy to Marcellus High School in recognition of the school winning the senator’s 2014 Southwest Michigan spirit contest in April.
“Congratulations to the Marcellus Wildcats for winning this year’s school spirit championship,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “I sponsored this competition to inspire students, schools and communities to show off their school pride in fun and imaginative ways. For the second year in a row, the tremendous display of school spirit from area students and supporters illustrated that no one has more spirit than Southwest Michigan.”
The social networking contest spanned six weeks and featured 40 area high schools, which were divided into four brackets named for features that characterize Southwest Michigan.
“I am so proud of our students as well as the entire Marcellus community for pulling together to earn the distinction as the Southwest Michigan spirit contest winner. Go Wildcats!” said Mindy Bohan, Marcellus Elementary School principal.
“The contest was designed to foster creativity by giving students and alumni an avenue to showcase their school spirit and tell everyone what makes their school great,” Proos said. “This year, more than 4,000 fans of 40 area high schools submitted thousands of photos and hundreds of videos. Marcellus students and supporters submitted more than 300 photos and scored a total of about 18,000 points.”
In the contest, supporters earned their favorite school points in several ways, including submitting videos and photos via Twitter. Once images were submitted, they were posted on Proos’ Facebook public figure page, John Proos Southwest Michigan Page, where the school earned a bonus point for each person who ‘Liked’ the image.
“Each week, the schools with the most points moved on, and most of the match-ups came down to the wire. In the end, the spirit and dedication of the Marcellus Wildcats could not be matched,” Proos said. “I want to say thank you to everyone who participated in making the second-annual spirit contest such a success, and I look forward to hosting it again next year!”
As the champion, Marcellus also received a special tribute commending the school for the spirit of its students and community. The tribute was signed by Proos; Sen. Bruce Caswell, R-Hillsdale; Rep. Matt Lori, R-Constantine; Congressman Fred Upton and Gov. Rick Snyder.
