LANSING—The Fourth of July weekend was huge for area hotels and tourism, as the Pure Michigan campaign continues to attract record numbers of out-of-state visitors to Michigan, said Sen. John Proos.
“I have always been a big supporter of the Pure Michigan tourism promotion program because it has a direct, positive effect on boosting tourism in Southwest Michigan and statewide,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “We continue to get back results that illustrate the impact Pure Michigan has on attracting tourists, supporting the thousands of Michigan families who depend on the tourism industry and also helping the state budget.
“For every dollar we invest in Pure Michigan, the state is now getting back $5.76 in revenue.”
According to a study by Longwoods International and the state tourism group Travel Michigan, the Pure Michigan summer promotion attracted 3.8 million out-of-visitors to Michigan in 2012, an increase of nearly 600,000 tourists. These out-of-state visitors spent $1.1 billion at Michigan businesses and paid more than $79 million in taxes.
“The Pure Michigan campaign successfully informs millions of people from across the country about all that Michigan has to offer them for an outstanding family vacation or a romantic getaway,” said Lisa Shanley, executive director of the South Haven/Van Buren County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “This year’s amazing Independence Day weekend turnout by out-of-state guests at area hotels and businesses is part of a steady increase we’ve seen each year due to the outreach of the Pure Michigan program.”
The Michigan Lodging and Tourism Association recently reported that 62 percent of hotels saw an increase in out-of-state visitors this Fourth of July, with some reporting increases as much as 50 to 75 percent or more.
“I strongly support the Pure Michigan campaign as an effective investment because it achieves three key goals: Help support local family businesses, generate economic activity and improve the state’s image to entrepreneurs considering creating jobs in Michigan,” Proos said.
