LANSING—In a collaboration between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), it was announced Tuesday that a DNA (eDNA) result for Silver Carp – a species of Asian carp – was found within the lower Kalamazoo River in Allegan County.
Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, had the following to say:
“The consistent inaction by the Obama Administration has resulted in Silver Carp, a species of Asian Carp, to inch closer to destroying our vital Southwest Michigan waterways, effectively jeopardizing a $4 billion fishing and tourism industry.
“For years I’ve called for the closure of the Chicago locks in order to prevent such invasive species from invading our lakes and rivers. Furthermore, this is just one step closer to the inundation of our Great Lakes by this devastating species.
“For this reason I have fought for passage of Senate Resolution 36 which supports closing the Chicago Locks and ending water diversions from the Great Lakes through Chicago. It’s diligent monitoring and proactive legislation like this that would have kept our waterways safe.”
