LANSING — Sen. John Proos announced on Thursday that he is hosting a social networking bracket tournament in which 32 high schools from throughout Southwest Michigan will compete for who has the most school spirit.
The first round of the competition begins on Monday, March 18 at noon and will go through noon on Friday, March 22. The entire competition will span five weeks, ending at noon on Friday, April 19.
“With ‘March Madness’ upon us, I thought it would be fun to get Southwest Michigan communities and high schools involved in a way that helps celebrate our schools and might inspire creativity in our youth,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “So for that reason, my office will be hosting the Michigan’s Great Southwest Spirit Tournament. I encourage the students and alumni to show their spirit and pride for their school and seize this as an opportunity to showcase what makes their school great.”
The 32 high schools in the tournament have been divided into four brackets that are named for features that identify the Southwest Michigan region. There are eight schools per region and each school’s opponents were chosen at random.
“Like the college basketball tournament, all 32 schools will compete the opening week, which starts Monday,” Proos said. “Each week, the schools with the most points move on, and there are several ways that you can earn your favorite school points — from voting in the online polls to posting videos about why your school should win and submitting them via Twitter.”
Other ways to earn points include sending a tweet to @JohnMProos or posting a tweet that includes the school name and #SWMISpirit.
For complete rules and information, visit Proos’ website at www.SenatorJohnProos.com or Proos’ Facebook fan page, “John Proos Southwest Michigan Page.”
“Each round ends on Friday at noon, so submit your family-friendly photos or video early,” Proos said. “Once submitted, they will be posted on my Facebook fan page and your school will earn a bonus point for each person who ‘Likes’ it.”
The tournament champion will receive a special tribute commending their school for showcasing their spirit. The tribute will be signed by Proos, Congressman Fred Upton, Gov. Rick Snyder and the school’s state representative.
