LANSING—After listening to Gov. Rick Snyder’s presentation of his proposed Fiscal Year 2015 state budget on Wednesday, Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, issued the following statement:

“The governor’s budget plan continues to build on the foundation laid down during the last three years to improve our economy and make the state more efficient. This firm footing has resulted in the creation of more than 220,000 jobs and an estimated $970 million surplus.

“Education is key to every child’s future. I strongly support the governor’s proposal to increase funding for all levels of education, but especially for our local public schools.

“The current School Aid budget is the largest in state history, and the governor’s plan would increase the foundation allowance by $150 million and add $270 million more to the school employee retirement system to reduce costs to the schools. The result would mean that state funds for K-12 education will be $1 billion more than in 2011.

“I am especially pleased to see the commitment for more career and technical education in schools so students have access to applied learning that can help them get the skills needed for high-wage jobs available in Michigan. I have long been a strong supporter of these programs and have introduced Senate Bill 66 to help these programs flourish in our schools.

“Our lives and our economy depend on quality roads and safe communities. The governor’s plan addresses both needs by using more than $250 million in existing funds to improve our roads and bridges and increasing revenue sharing to local units of government by 3 percent to $765 million in order to fund services like police and fire.

“As an illustration of Michigan’s priorities, the governor’s $52.1 billion budget recommendation dedicates 75 percent of spending to education and health and human services.”
