LANSING—Sen. John Proos spoke to Southwest Michigan community and businesses leaders at the SUMMIT 2013 at Lake Michigan College’s South Haven campus on Friday. Proos talked about steps the state has taken to improve the economy and bring jobs to Michigan.

“Michigan is moving again and our economy is recovering, and the winners are Southwest Michigan families, job providers and job seekers,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “We have worked hard to create a positive business environment that allows small, local businesses to grow and attracts new job providers. As a result of focusing on a more efficient and less intrusive government, Michigan ranks first in the nation for recovery and more than 180,000 jobs have been created.”

Proos said that in the last three years, the Legislature has worked with the governor to cut about 1,900 burdensome rules and regulations, eliminated a $1.5 billion state budget deficit and reduced the state’s long-term liabilities by billions of dollars.

SUMMIT 2013 was hosted by the South Haven Area Chamber of Commerce as an educational program for Southwest Michigan community and businesses leaders to learn about opportunities for economic development. Participants heard from several Michigan leaders during the day-long program, with Zingerman’s founder Paul Saginaw delivering the keynote address.
