Parks’ efforts resulted in the term being added to the publication.

The history of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is marked by perseverance and pride. There will be a celebration to commemorate the inclusion of the word “Yooper” in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, and ensure that those who reference this iconic publication, with its 150 years of accumulated knowledge and experience, correctly know that natives and residents of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are proudly known as “Yoopers.”

Merriam-Webster is an American company that publishes reference books, especially dictionaries that are descendants of Noah Webster’s An American Dictionary of the English Language (1828). Their dictionaries are generally considered the foremost guide to the English Language.
