LANSING, Mich.— Attorney General Bill Schuette andUSAttorney Carmen M. Ortiz of the District of Massachusetts on Monday announced  a new coordination of their continuing independent state and federal criminal investigations of New England Compounding Center (NECC).

NECC is a now-defunct Massachusetts company that distributed tainted injections of a steroid, known as methylprednisolone acetate, to clinics throughout the country.

“I am thrilled a full and proper investigation has been launched,” said Hune, R-Hamburg Township. “I think if this had not been done, the safety of the people Michigan and across the county could be compromised.”

As of March 4, the  number of fungal meningitis infections resulting from the NECC is up to 253 total cases, including 13 deaths in Michigan. Several of these deaths have taken place in the 22nd District.

“Unfortunately, the investigation cannot bring those who have died back to life,” Hune said. “I hope no stone goes unturned in this investigation.”
