Give the gift of life this Valentine’s Day

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. John Proos is highlighting National Organ Donor Day and encouraging all Southwest Michigan residents to consider registering to become an organ donor.

“There are thousands of Americans currently in need of a lifesaving organ transplant, including more than 3,300 people here in Michigan,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “Although more than 60 percent of Michigan adults are currently registered as organ donors, it’s not enough to meet the need. On average, 88 lives are saved each day by an organ transplant in the U.S., but 22 people die each day waiting for an available organ.

“Valentine’s Day is National Organ Donor Day, and it’s a time to raise awareness about our state’s organ donor registry and how simple it is for each of us to potentially save the life of someone we love or someone we will never meet.”

According to Donate Life America, more than 115,000 men, women and children nationwide currently need an organ transplant and every 10 minutes another name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list.

“Last year, the governor signed my legislation, known as Lauren’s Law, to help increase the number of registered organ donors in Michigan,” Proos said. “We are already seeing positive results from this initiative, and hopefully one day we will have enough registered donors to end the waiting list in Michigan for lifesaving transplants.”

For information about organ donation and how to sign up to become a donor, residents may visit www.SenatorJohnProos.com/DonateLife.

Residents can sign up to become a donor by visiting any Michigan secretary of state branch office or by visiting www.michigan.gov/sos and clicking on “Organ Donation.”

“I encourage residents to check their driver’s license to see if they are registered, and if not, take a moment to sign up,” Proos said. “Becoming an organ donor is easy to do and could save many lives. In fact, donations from one person can save or enhance the lives of up to 75 people.”
